Randi Miller: The Long Kiss Goodbye

We all reach a point in our lives where we develop a need for self-examination, to try to pinpoint the events that may be responsible for aspects of our personalities or relationship behaviors that we cannot otherwise explain. Is it because we so desperately need to place blame or have an excuse? I don't think so. I think it's important to us because it's the only way we can assure ourselves that we're not crazy, or stupid. There is nothing worse than going through one's entire adult life with unanswered questions.

Unlike many people, as I have recently discovered, I have known since shooting out of the womb that I was gay. I didn't feel compelled to shout it from the rooftops; it was just who I was, and that was that. Bear in mind that in the early '70s, when I was sneaking up on puberty, being gay was not cool. Nobody was gay -- no teachers, classmates, or celebrities (except Liberace), and certainly no characters on sitcoms. Nobody was gay. I felt like I was the only gay person alive, and it was a tragic and devastatingly lonely existence on many levels. I thought a lot about suicide.

To cope with my loneliness, I wrote songs and poetry like a machine, churning them out at an alarming rate, and the running theme of my life was unrequited love. Almost every song I wrote and performed throughout junior and senior high was about loving someone who didn't love me back, and while it sounds quite pitiful now, these tunes made me quite popular among the girls in school. Often, they were unknowingly the very people about whom these morose ditties were written. One such person was Lisa in my 9th-grade class. She was a beautiful and popular cheerleader who was drawn to my music and would sometimes plop down next to me on the floor of the hallway in which I was playing and singing. One day she began to sing along, and I was so tickled that she knew the words to my songs and yet couldn't carry a tune. Somehow, we became unlikely friends, and we spent that whole summer between junior and senior high school getting to know each other.

We attended different high schools, and after that summer was over, she seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. I remember being so hurt and surprised, and I chalked it up to the popular girl not wanting people to know she was friends with that creepy little tomboy who always played guitar in the girls' bathroom.

Seven years passed, and one fall night, my mother handed me an Army business card with a familiar first name written on the back, along with a telephone number. Mom had worked at the same pharmacy for years, and she had worked there that fateful summer, so Lisa knew where to find her in order to find me. I couldn't wait to call her, to see her, to ask her where she had gone. She had cut all her beautiful, blonde hair short, and I was surprised to realize that it wouldn't have mattered if she had shaved her head; she still looked gorgeous to me. It wasn't long before she was confessing her love for me, and thus began a whirlwind romance that burned hot right through Christmas.

She came to the Christmas Eve service at my church, and my Great-Aunt Lolly fell asleep on her shoulder as I rang handbells and sang in the choir. After the service we went back to my house, where I gave her a music box that played "Evergreen," and it was the best Christmas I could remember. I couldn't stop thinking about fate and destiny, about how amazing it was that this person I had felt such a connection with all those years ago had come back to me out of the clear blue sky and professed her love for me. It was meant to be. It was perfect. And I was happy, for the very first time.

Then one night I went to pick her up, and she was gone. Her family was suddenly quite hostile to me, and nobody would tell me where she was or when she would return. It was like a bizarre movie that I had been thrown into, and it went on for weeks... no phone calls, no nothing. I kept showing up at her family home and was repeatedly turned away without explanation. I started driving down her street in hopes of seeing her, but to no avail. Months had passed without answers, then years, when I found myself standing in the Giant helping my mom rent a carpet cleaner and looked up to see her standing in line with her mother, and a baby.

I felt like I had lost my mind, that it had all been some weird dream. I was driving down the road one night and spontaneously traded in my car for a new one, simply because my car was literally haunted by memories of her, and I just couldn't take it anymore.

Over the years I found myself incapable of trusting, and I had several failed relationships whose downfall was entirely my doing. I pushed people away to strike the first blow, to keep from getting hurt, and ended up thrusting myself into more loneliness. I found myself drawn to the unattainable, those I knew could never be mine, for in some strange way, they were safe. If I could not have them, they could never leave me. They could never drop off the face of the Earth and break my heart.

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to Lisa for the first time in 25 years and finally heard her side of the story. It was her disapproving family that was our undoing. She told me how sorry she was for hurting me, and that after years of living someone else's life, she had finally come to terms with who she is, which made me glad for her. And although I had waited all those years for an apology and was grateful to finally get closure after half a lifetime, I was brought to tears was when she told me that she had known in the 9th grade how much I loved her, and that what I never knew was that she had loved me back. I am not a person who cries, and yet I sat there with the phone to my ear, silently weeping.

I had spent my life believing I had been unloved, and having given my love so freely and honestly all those years ago only to be abandoned without explanation had felt like a cruel joke. And it touched every relationship that followed in one way or another, as all experiences do. Finding out that she loved me that long ago somehow validated me in a strange and wonderful way, and I feel like my emotional passport finally got stamped. I am now free to move about the universe.

If you love someone, tell them. If you don't, tell them that, too. The love we share is a powerful thing, and the love we withhold can be devastating, especially if it's from ourselves.

All About Board Games: Electronic Features With Board Games ...

A number of board games have expanded themselves to make gaming even easier for all of its players. With handy electronic gadgets that now come with the games, players no longer need to worry about many of the smaller details which can hold them back from the game. These devices are designed to allow the maximum amount of freedom and ease when it comes to game play, putting even less pressure on the mechanics of the game and more on the strategy that goes into winning the game.

One of the most popular electronic devices that is often implemented is the use of an electronic timer. Games that provide one of these allow players to not have to worry about watching the little sand timer that games used to provide. This allows the player to focus on the task at hand rather than to watch the timer, often providing crucial seconds. Pictionary and Scattergories are both games which use timers and with an electronic device, more attention can be paid to playing the game.

Another fun electronic device that comes into play often is a buzzer. Taboo is one game that implements a buzzer, used to either signal when a player has stepped out of bounds, or when the round is over. During play with Taboo, one player from a team tries to make his or her teammates guess a certain word without saying other words on a list. One player from the other team monitors this player, to ensure that he or she does not say any of the forbidden words. If one of these words accidentally slips out, the buzzer is then heavily used.

Some classic games, however, have updated themselves to include electronic features. Monopoly now features an Electronic Banking edition, which eliminates all use of paper money, controlling the entire cash flow of the game through a little computer given with the game board. Players are given debit cards on which their entire fortune is contained and the computer keeps track of each player's total amount. Properties and hotels are bought with the card, fines are paid, and money changes hands all with one swipe. This allows for a much quicker game and generally happier players all around.

The Game of Life is another classic game which has updated itself with exciting electronic features. A take-off from the original game, Life: Twists and Turns is an innovative take on the previous incarnation. Each player is given an electronic "Lifepod" at the beginning of the game which not only tabulates the number of "Life Points" that each player accumulates, but controls both the money of the player and even rolls the "dice" for them.

This game, like Electronic Banking Monopoly, doesn't rely on cash to get players through the game, but provides them with debit cards which help each player control the money that comes in and out of their hands. It is quite an innovative take on the game that allows players more time with the game and less with the mechanics of making it run smoothly. With the way that innovation is redesigning the game industry, it is no surprise that these classic board games are finding new life with players.

(AP) ? Libya's leader acknowledged Tuesday that his transitional government is powerless to control militias that are refusing to lay down their arms after ousting Moammar Gadhafi as it struggles to impose control over the oil-rich North African nation.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil warned that remnants of the former regime also still pose a threat and it will take years for Libya's new leaders to overcome a "heavy heritage" of corruption and distrust after more than four decades of Gadhafi's rule.

Abdul-Jalil said the governing National Transitional Council has made mistakes, but he also criticized former rebels who have formed powerful militias and local governments that have emerged as rivals to the Tripoli-based central government that assumed power after Gadhafi was ousted.

"Both are to blame," he said. "The governmental program to integrate the militias is slow and the revolutionaries don't trust it."

Libya is celebrating the first anniversary of the Feb. 17 start of the revolution last year when peaceful anti-government protesters took up weapons in the face of a deadly crackdown by Gadhafi's forces against their rallies. Libya declared liberation after Gadhafi was captured and killed in October and is getting ready for national assembly elections in June. The new assembly will form a government and set up a panel to draft a constitution.

However, the country has been plagued by revenge attacks by those who suffered at the hands of Gadhafi's forces during the brutal civil war. Human rights groups have documented reports of widespread torture and killings of detainees.

Hundreds of armed militias that fought against Gadhafi's forces are the real power on the ground in the country, wielding control over cities, neighborhoods and borders while the transitional government has been unable to rein in fighters, rebuild decimated institutions or stop widespread corruption.

Underscoring the turmoil, some 50 civilians have been killed in the past 24 hours in tribal warfare in southern Libya, witnesses said Tuesday. But there were conflicting accounts about the cause of the conflict.

Abdul-Jalil said Gadhafi's regime loyalists were "seeding sedition" in Kufra but declined to elaborate on which of the tribes are connected to the former regime.

Salem Samadi, who heads a revolutionary militia and has tried to mediate a truce between the two sides, blamed the outbreak of violence on a fight over smuggling.

Abdul-Jalil, 60, who has led the NTC since it was formed in opposition, said Libyans need years to overcome a culture of corruption, mistrust and build state institutions and rule of law.

"What Gadhafi left for us in Libya after 40 years is a very, very heavy heritage," he said, speaking in his office in Tripoli. "It is very heavy and will be hard to get over it in one or two years or even five years."

He also said that Gadhafi's relatives and loyalists remain a danger because they are hosted by countries that don't have control over them. He didn't name the countries but said that Libya's future relations with neighbors will be determined by how they respond to Libyan demands to hand over former regime forces on their territories.

As the Libyan capital of Tripoli fell to rebel forces, Gadhafi's daughter, Aisha, her mother and two of her brothers fled to neighboring Algeria, while another son Al-Saadi and dozens of senior military officers went to Niger.

"We have to take a strong stance with neighbors," he said.

Libyan officials were angered earlier this month when Al-Saadi Gadhafi, who Niger says is under house arrest, warned in a television interview that his homeland was facing a new uprising. Gadhafi's son told Al-Arabiya TV in a telephone interview that supporters of his father's ousted regime "are suffering tremendously" in Libyan prisons at the hands of the country's new rulers. He also said his return to Libya was imminent.

Abdul-Jalil also said that Gadhafi loyalists have infiltrated revolutionary forces and even formed their own militia.

"We call them the revolutionaries after the revolution," he said.

With regard to the upcoming national assembly elections, Abdul-Jalil said the council will issue a new law banning foreign funding for political parties. Islamists in Libya have been linked to oil-rich gulf country of Qatar, which was a favorite exile for top Libyan Islamists, including those from the Muslim Brotherhood.

"Within 10 days, we will issue rules ... banning receiving funds from outside the country," he said. Abdul-Jalil has said he won't run in the presidential race or seek a future political role.

Abdul-Jalil, who was justice minister under Gadhafi when he defected to the rebels' side, said the NTC has been paralyzed by the need for consensus in decision making and that has stopped it from carrying out much-needed reforms.

"We committed many mistakes," he said. "Democracy and taking votes to make decision in many, many incidents led us to these mistakes," he said. "My vote as someone who entered the council last year is considered equal to a vote of a member who joined the council this February."

Abdul-Jalil enjoys a great amount of popularity in Libya, but he has increasingly been criticized for lacking leadership skills and the inability to take decisive measures.

Mohammed Abdullah, a leading member of Libya National Salvation front, a longtime opposition movement that is transforming itself into a political party, said that was true of all members of the NTC.

"The way the NTC is run is just similar to the old regime with no vision," he said.

Despite his complaints about the inability to rein in armed fighters, Abdul-Jalil paid homage to the sacrifices of fighters in cities that suffered most during the revolution, particularly Misrata.

He said the failure to seriously investigate Gadhafi-era war atrocities as well as the absence of police and courts has left the door open for individuals to take matters into their own hands. Even families who were not linked to Gadhafi regime but fled during the war have been tagged as traitors and forced to leave their houses when they returned.

"Misrata suffered the most, more than any other city but it is also going too far in enmity and expulsions," he said. "Dealing with victorious soldiers is much harder than dealing with the ones defeated."

Why Are Scientists Firing Rockets Against Auroras? [Image Cache]

NASA scientists are now firing 46-foot-tall two-stage rockets against auroras because they hate them and they smell bad. Or maybe because they want to test how extreme space weather can affect digital communications between ground bases and spacecraft or satellites. More »

France Elections: Sarkozy Focuses On Crisis Leadership As President

By Emmanuel Jarry
MARSEILLE, France, Feb 19 (Reuters) - President Nicolas Sarkozy told an election rally on Sunday that his policies had saved France from economic ruin and that he alone had the courage to stick to reforms that would see the nation emerge stronger from today's turmoil.
Addressing 7,000 supporters in the port city of Marseille in the second rally of his campaign, Sarkozy accused Socialist Francois Hollande of being dishonest about the risks still facing France and being wishy-washy about his policy plans.
The centre-right Sarkozy is grappling with disapproval ratings of 67-68 percent and opinion polls placing him 12 points behind Hollande for a May 6 runoff where the pair are likely to face off following an April 22 first round.
"We avoided catastrophe," Sarkozy said, adding that anyone who doubted his management of the crisis should look at the dire economic situation in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
"France has not been swept away by the crisis of confidence that has ravaged so many countries. We have not seen the despair and violence that have set ablaze countries near our borders," he said, to cheers.
"If we don't understand the crisis and the risks it creates for us, not only can we not judge the past but we can't imagine, or prepare for, the future. Denying the crisis is not only dishonest, it's dangerous."
Sarkozy is betting that his experience steering France and the euro zone through crisis will be his most effective weapon against Hollande, a textbook Socialist who is popular on the left but lacks experience in a ministerial post.
While Sarkozy is vowing structural reforms to aid flagging competitiveness and bolster growth and employment, Hollande's programme is based around raising taxes on the wealthy to fund investment in education, research and state-aided jobs.
Opponents of Hollande have criticised a lack of clarity over his plans to row back on Sarkozy's raising of the retirement age to 62 from 60 and for sounding a pro-market line to Anglo-Saxon audiences while declaring war on finance in a speech in France.

TWO-HORSE RACE
The race, which began in earnest last week when Sarkozy declared his candidacy for reelection, has turned into a clear two-horse race as support for far-right leader Marine Le Pen and centrist Francois Bayrou has waned.
Sarkozy's 2007 election win was helped by support from the far-right, and he sought to keep National Front voters on his side on Sunday by proposing to introduce some proportionality to legislative elections, a move that would benefit small parties like Le Pen's.
He also maintained a hard-right line on immigration, saying it must be controlled to protect the unemployed, and reiterating his opposition to euthanasia and gay marriage.
At her own rally in the northern industrial city of Lille, Le Pen urged right-wingers to vote en masse against Sarkozy on April 22 to knock him out of the May 6 runoff.
"People of France, give Nicolas Sarkozy a red card. Let's get him off the pitch," she said as some 2,000 supporters cheered and brandished symbolic red cards.
She slammed an effort by Sarkozy on Sunday to brand himself as "a candidate of the people" rather than "of the elite", as he strives to reconnect with an electorate where many say they will be voting against him rather than for a rival candidate.
A survey by TNS Sofres published on Sunday showed 54 percent of respondents were "certain" they would not vote for Sarkozy in a runoff.
Sarkozy's bid to reach out to the man in the street, underpinned by a pledge this week to hold regular referendums on policy, seemed to respond to criticism early in his term over his chumminess with the rich, who benefitted from his tax cuts, and his penchant for luxury yachts and private jets.
"The candidate of the powerful has become, with a stroke of media magic, the candidate of the people," Le Pen said. "It's the ultimate insult from a failed presidency."
Sarkozy, well aware that his brash personality grates with many, has made a huge effort of late to appear more austere and erudite, and has kept his private life out of sight.
Former supermodel first lady Carla Bruni, whose romance with Sarkozy after he came to power shocked many, kept a low profile on Sunday, wearing her hair down and a plain business suit. She embraced Sarkozy demurely and called his speech "very moving". (Additional reporting by John Irish in Lille; Writing by Catherine Bremer in Paris Editing by Maria Golovnina)

According to the Sunday Times, Sarkozy said of President Obama: "[He] has a subtle mind, very clever and very charismatic...but he was elected two months ago and had never run a ministry. There are a certain number of things on which he has no position. And he is not always up to standard on decision-making and efficiency." According to the Sunday Times, Sarkozy said of President Obama: "[He] has a subtle mind, very clever and very charismatic...but he was elected two months ago and had never run a ministry. There are a certain number of things on which he has no position. And he is not always up to standard on decision-making and efficiency."

Pogo Sketch Pro (for iPad)

Our favorite iPad stylus is the simplest we tested. The Pogo Sketch Pro ($24.95), the highest-end model in Ten One Design's Pogo stylus series, is a serious, well-balanced stylus for creating artwork on your iPad (and maybe your Android tablet as well.)

Why use a stylus on your iPad? It gives you more precision when you're drawing or making handwritten notes, and it gets your finger out of the way. A stylus turns your tablet into a true sketchbook or notepad.

The Sketch Pro is a tapered aluminum stylus with a comfortable, slightly bulging rubber grip. It comes with two screw-on tips: one is squishy, the other firmer with a rough texture. The stylus also comes with a little travel bag.

Compared to last year's Editors' Choice, the Wacom Bamboo Stylus ($29.99, 4 stars), the Sketch Pro is longer at 5.5 inches, and its tapered body speaks more of drawing and painting than the more pen-like Bamboo. I liked the additional length, which gave the stylus excellent balance.

I had professional artist (and my wife)?Leontine Greenberg test the Pogo Sketch Pro and she pronounced it "boring, but in the end my pick? most like a regular thing you would draw with in real life." The tip's friction made it easier to control than the Nomad Compose ($39, 3.5 stars) and oStylus ($37.50, 3 stars), and the stylus had better balance and was easier to maneuver than the Cosmonaut ($25, 3 stars).

I agree: for note-taking as well as drawing, the Pogo Sketch Pro is the best stylus we tested. There's nothing we'd improve about this. It's our Editors' Choice.

Three New York University faculty have been awarded fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation: Robert Froemke, an assistant professor in the Departments of Otolaryngology, Physiology, and Neuroscience at NYU Langone Medical Center; Pierre Germain, an assistant professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences; and Virgiliu Midrigan, an assistant professor in the Department of Economics.

The fellowships are given to early-career scientists and scholars "whose achievements and potential identify them as rising starsthe next generation of scientific leaders," the Sloan Foundation said in announcing this year's fellows.

"Today's Sloan Research Fellows are tomorrow's Nobel Prize winners," said Paul Joskow, president of the Sloan Foundation. "These outstanding men and women are responsible for some of the most exciting science being done today. The Foundation is proud to support them during this pivotal stage of their careers."

Fellows receive $50,000, over a two-year period, to further their research.

Froemke studies neuroplasticity: how experiences change the brain and how these changes in neural networks then affect behavior. Experiments performed by Froemke and his staff aim to reveal how individual synapses are changed by alterations in the patterns of neural activity, neurochemical signaling, and sensory experience. By a combination of electrical recordings from single nerve cells, computational analysis, and behavioral experiments, Froemke's research seeks to discover basic principles and quantitative rules by which neural circuits and synapses develop during childhood and are reorganized in adults, triggered by arousal, reward, and social contact.

Germain studies nonlinear dispersive equations, which describe a wealth of physical phenomena, from quantum mechanics to general relativity to fluid mechanics. Germain's recent work has focused on waves at the surface of the ocean. His research provides tools to understand their behavior over long periods of time, which aids in our understanding of tsunamis, among other phenomena.

Midrigan studies the implications of price rigidities for the conduct of monetary policy and business cycle fluctuations, the sources of movements in international relative prices, the determinants of the large cross-country differences in output and productivity, as well as the welfare gains from international trade.

Historically awarded in seven scientific fieldschemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, evolutionary and computational molecular biology, neuroscience, and physicsthe fellowships were expanded this year to include awards to eight young researchers working in the ocean sciences.

###

Administered and funded by the Sloan Foundation, the fellowships are awarded in close cooperation with the scientific community. To qualify, candidates must first be nominated by their peers and are subsequently selected by an independent panel of senior scholars.

Greece seeks Monday bailout deal, EU questions remain (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece expressed hope it can secure its second EU/IMF bailout in as many years and a deal on easing its debt burden next week, but its euro zone peers made clear the months of increasingly ill-tempered argument are not quite over yet.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said the Greek side had met the final two demands set by the European Union and IMF to seal the 130 billion-euro rescue, which Athens needs to avoid a chaotic default when big debt repayments fall due in March.

But a government official in Germany, which has got involved in testy exchanges with Athens over its will to tackle its problems, said the Greek side still had questions to answer.

Greece pinned its hopes on a meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Monday, after talks in Athens and at the euro zone level failed to produce a deal to avert a Greek bankruptcy which could shake financial markets around the globe.

Venizelos told reporters late on Wednesday the cabinet had decided how to plug a 325 million-euro gap in the 3.3 billion euros of extra budget savings this year which the EU and IMF are demanding.

And he noted that the leaders of both parties in the government of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos had given written undertakings to implement the austerity measures, which provoked a night of fighting, arson and looting in Athens on Sunday.

Exasperated euro zone finance ministers in the Eurogroup had demanded both steps be taken before making a final decision on the bailout.

MISTRUST OF ATHENS

With mistrust of Athens running high, EU sources told Reuters that euro zone officials had considered whether it was possible to delay part or all of the rescue deal while still avoiding a disorderly default.

Greece needs the funds to avoid bankruptcy when 14.5 billion euros of debt repayments fall due on March 20.

"The big issue of the 325 million euros has been finalised and this helped the discussion," Venizelos said following a lengthy telephone conference call with his euro zone peers.

The Eurogroup had been due to meet in Brussels on Wednesday but its Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker scaled this down to a teleconference, complaining that Greek political leaders had failed to provide written commitments or plug the savings gap.

Greek party leaders have a reputation for working right up to deadlines, or beyond them, raising tensions with the Eurogroup which fears that they will avoid implementing the austerity package in full after elections expected in April.

However, conservative leader Antonis Samaras, the front runner to become the next prime minister, provided his written undertaking to the EU and IMF on Wednesday shortly before the Eurogroup conference call. Socialist leader George Papandreou wrote a similar letter.

Venizelos said he hoped euro zone officials could tie up all the issues before the ministerial Eurogroup meets on Monday, opening the way for a bond swap deal with Greece's private creditors, known as PSI, which will reduce its debt mountain.

"These issues will be prepared at a Euro Working Group meeting on Sunday in Brussels so that, with good faith, the final decision for the approval of the (bailout) programme is taken and the public announcement of the PSI is made on Monday," he told reporters.

Greece had said it must initiate a debt swap deal with private sector bondholders by Friday to meet the March 20 debt deadline. It was hoping to win the euro zone's backing for its second bailout this week. If that backing now comes on Monday, it is possible the debt swap could start mid-next week.

OPEN MATTERS

After the three-hour conference call among the 17 euro zone ministers, Juncker issued a statement saying progress had been made, but provided few details. However, he made clear some matters remained open on making sure the bailout plan is carried out in full.

"Further considerations are necessary regarding the specific mechanisms to strengthen the surveillance of programme implementation and to ensure that priority is given to debt servicing," he said.

One government official in Germany, where public opinion is hostile to bailing out Greece, was cautious.

"Questions remain that are very important to Germany and other member states about the sustainability of the programme," said the official, who declined to be named.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble appeared to question whether Greece would stand by the austerity package after the elections.

"When you look at the internal political discussions in Greece and the opinion polls, then you have to ask who will really guarantee after the elections ... that Greece will stand by what we are now agreeing with Greece," he told SWR2 radio.

Greek President Karolos Papoulias, who holds a largely ceremonial role, fought back, saying: "Who is Mr Schaeuble to insult Greece?"
