Maine Mummy: Everyday Restaurant Review: Cracker Barrel

Restaurant reviews have a tendency to focus on independent local places,
critics are rarely concerned with the everyday place that most people
spend their time and money in. If you want to know what's good at
Bugaboo Creek, or if you will like Olive Garden, then you generally have
to phone a friend.

On Sunday night Husby and I went on a date, to Cracker Barrel. Our local Cracker Barrel opened last year and despite wanting to, we had yet to go. I have heard nothing about it, save that the store is cool, and so really wanted to go. Since I was in the mood for some home style food, it seemed, from the name of the place, that this was the right place to go.

As the AC was quite chilly we each had a hot drink, I was pleasantly surprised with my English Breakfast Tea as I am quite picky about such things. We did not have a starter, as the meals described seemed to be quite large, and, well, if Fried Mushrooms aren't on the menu I'm hard pressed to pick one. Husby ordered the Reuben Platter, and I, having gone with the intent of having Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes, had Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes. You get three sides and corn bread and a biscuit with your meal. I liked this as often I have to choose cornbread at the expense of another side. As well as regular ole Corn and Mashed Potatoes, I tried the Fried Apples that seemed to be a Cracker Barrel signature. Imagine an Apple Crumble (Crisp), removing the Crumbly (crispy) part, the remaining apple mix that you are left with is what they mean by Fried Apples. Great with Pork Chops but not so great with Meatloaf. It easily adapted and served as a dessert however. The Meatloaf was good but not brimming with flavor, as were the mashed potatoes. My husband enjoyed his Reuben Platter but commented that it was "Meh," which in his language means nothing special but not bad. He had a side of Chicken and Rice soup, and I think would have quite happily taken a bath in the stuff. I'd be interested in trying their Chicken Pie because the soup was excellent. We did not have dessert.

It was much cheaper than I was expecting, a little over twenty bucks for two meals and two hot drinks isn't bad for a family on a budget looking for a date night.

The woman who seated us was very pleasant. The woman who served us was pleasant but also moved along at a brisk clip which I appreciated. She brought the bill while we were still eating which some might not like but I LOVED because when I am done, I am done and I want to be gone. I hate having to wait, or even worse ask for the bill. She thought I was on vacation which was cute. Drinks service was quick and she checked for refills without being disruptive.

The table was clean, the silverware was clean, the ketchup bottle was not sticky. These things should be a given but they are not so I give credit! The bathrooms were great. We were there between 5.30 and 7 on a Sunday and they were spotless. Clean, not damp, no toilet paper sticking to unusual places. They also indicated the there was a baby changing station in the mens room which is a big thumbs up for this chain in my book. When I was pregnant, Toby's diapers made me throw up, so Husby had to change most of them. It became a problem when eating out, since public bathrooms also made me nauseous! I used to hold my breath and inhale through a wipey when I needed to breathe!

The piece de resistance of the Cracker Barrel experience is the store. It was everything I expected from every good quality tourist trap we visited in Florida when I was 11, I love those places. Patriotic clothing, old fashioned candy, wooden toys, vintage toys, decorations, ornaments, cds and dvds of classic shows/music. We found Toby's birthday present there. We spent as much time looking at stuff as we did eating our meal. It was a lot of fun, though I suppose that initial thrill might decrease with subsequent visits.

The Ratings:

Food 2/5

Value 5/5

Service 5/5

Atmosphere 5/5

Other 5/5

The food was not bad and since everything else was fantastic it definitely bears a couple of repeat visits. The menu is varied enough and cheap enough for a second and third chance. They serve breakfast all day so that might be worth a shot next time. Three bland meals though and I might be singing a different song.

How will Debt Management affect your Credit Rating

A good debt management plan always helps you to enhance your credit rating. Anyone can ask these debt management companies; they are however eager to help you.? The belief is that these debt management companies are fake and there to trap you, it is a false notion that needs to be debunked.? They are the beings of light who respond to your calls of guidance, assistance, and comfort. Debt management programs provide abundance for everyone, one only has to let go and have a faith.

Undoubtedly, debt management can ameliorate your credit rating. However, at times your debts become so difficult and irreparable that you can?t afford to meet all your repayments, in such cases your credit rating is affected.

In this situation whether you need to consider debt management programs or not is more relevant things to discuss.

Using a debt management program to repay your debt is not ill advised.

It may not affect your credit rating, but it will be bit difficult for you to qualify for a new credit.

How to protect the credit score

? When you apply for a debt management plan, you write a monthly check in favor of debt management companies and the credit counseling agency pays to your creditors. This debt management programs last for minimum 3 or 4 years. A remark stating that you?re paying credit counseling agencies will surely appear in your credit report. But such a comment won?t hurt your credit rating. Since, 1999 FICO has considered credit counseling information, as irrelevant information when calculating consumer credit score.

Further Craig Watts, public affairs senior manager for Fair Isaac Corp remarked that those who obtain debt management program should not be punished.

New Credit

Still, there is one thing that demands attention, if you are participating for additional debt, then most of the debt management companies won?t permit you to get additional debt. Maxine Sweet, vice president of consumer affairs for Experian has highlighted the fact that people who are serious about their debt adopt a debt management plan. It is in fact a positive sign that consumer has taken a step to solve their debt problem.? The more a creditor bases the decision on a consumer credit scores, the less likely there is a consumer?s participation in a debt management plan.

No doubt, your credit score is an important number that affect how much you pay for insurance and other necessities. A good credit lender will overlook any comment, they use the score to access your present situations. Basically, what matters is scoring. If your scores are good, none can deny you credit. Paying off the debt on your own or through a good debt management plan will boost your credit score.

?

Today you can say with a confidence that debt management plans can be beckoned when anyone needs superior or immediate assistance. The debt counselors act like a spiritual being beings that can help you all the time without any time restrictions. Although we apprehend the matter of debt as a serious problem, yet a debt management company acts as a link between our problem and solution.

?

Surely, with a right debt management plan you will have a smile on your face. Debt counselors take every aspect of your problem seriously.

?Last Payment affects you

?

What will affect your credit score? It is the most vital question that is beyond one?s comprehension. Late Payments can affect your credit score. Those negative remarks can hurt you and it can mar your credit report for 7 years. A long time huh!

So, making right payments is the need of an hour.

Make the right decision

It is important to choose a debt management plan wisely. If your agency defaults in making the payment, it?s your credit score that gets marred. Additionally, the monthly fees of debt management plans may vary widely. It all depends upon you to shop and research the debt management plan according to your requirements. No doubt, these companies will work on your anger, fear, but keeping a tab on these companies will work in your favor. Situations are the same, they don?t change, but we can attain peace and happiness; if you choose the program wisely.

The icing on the cake is you get negotiated interest rates, lower monthly payments, and no late fees. Also, now you won?t have to tolerate pesky creditor?s calls. Debt counseling agencies generally charge a commission for their work.

There are various debt calculators that can solve the most important decisions of your life- whether to purchase a car, home or getting a student loan.

Debt counselors are forever delighted to help you. And in return a small amount of commission keeps them at your beck and call.

Green Business Innovation : Offices can now print on a E-paper and ...

Architects typically work with large-format drawings on 24 by 36-inch or larger paper. Most architectural firms have their own large-format printers or plotters to print and copy computer-generated drawings. Architects and construction houses waste a lot of paper. Even when they design a LEED building. Because the way most of them work is not sustainable at all, this I covered in my earlier article, Green Buildings ? How most of them are really made, the inside story.

The reason for this is simple. The corporates which run these architectural houses are mostly developers who have become so callused by the ?system? which runs India, that they have lost the perspective of good and bad. For most of them Sustainability is another ?task? and ?Green norms? are an impediment which they need to give a lip service too. Thus one would see, even for a small correction or revision, entire design sheets are printed, minimum 3 prints of size A -Zero.

Since trees come in all different sizes, it is difficult to estimate how much paper comes from one tree, however according to one paper manufacturer, a cord of wood measuring 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet produces nearly 90,000 sheets paper. Taking the last census report, India?s total population was around 1,20,00,00,000. If every Indian save one sheet of paper a day approximately 15,000 Trees can be saved. If 15,000 Trees can be saved just by not wasting one sheet of paper a day, imagine of how many trees can be saved if we become more? prudent in our approach.

Let us consider some interesting facts which I have gathered from various sources -

1. Consider this: according to the state government of Australia, over 600,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard are sent to landfill in NSW every year. Australians as a whole use 210,000 tonnes of office paper each year ? and much of this is not from recycled sources but from virgin forests.

2. In the USA The average student uses about 11 sheets of paper per day. The school year goes on average 180 days so this would equal to 23,760 sheets for 12 years.

3. A Seattle based study found that businesses typically throw away about half of all documents within 24 hours of printing. In fact, about 170 tons of paper is sent to Seattle?s landfills each day from Seattle businesses.

For every dollar spent on printing documents, companies typically incur $6 in handling and distribution costs, according to a Xerox study.

Over the course of a year Seattle paper waste contributes about 9,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the same as the emissions from consuming 972,000 gallons of gasoline.?

This is a study by Xerox of one American city, in India and rest of the developing world we do not have such studies done or reports published. Simply because we do not think this as a problem which needs urgent and immediate attention.

But such problems can not be defined locally any more. The devastation in Japan? a year back has come to haunt the American West coast in form of? Billion ton of debris. Similarly the decimation of rain forests for pulp & paper industry would lead to unprecedented challenges more severe than what we have experienced till date and it would not be their locally. This is known to all, yet we fail to arrest easily achievable targets, such as reduction on dependence on Paper. We all know by now that it is somewhere between difficult and impossible to have a paperless office/school . But how much paper do we consume unnecessarily? It is no more possible to contain the problem by raising ones personal bar as to when one needs a paper copy of something from the computer. Strong legislation are required which would make it near mandatory that unless you?re printing something super important,(which can be defined and refined on a weekly/monthly basis by each corporation) one must? save ink and paper by tracking changes in electronic documents.

To make this legislation work, one must however understand the fundamental barrier. We still like to hold up a piece of paper in our hand and look at it from time to time, jot notes directly at the margins, rather than type for every little corrections. Moreover, for architects and other engineering professionals, physically scanning the page from top to bottom, is more sure-fire way to spot? an error than scrolling a large drawing and zooming in and out of it. It simply does not work ! I know that from personal experience. So how does one adhere to reduction of paper use and not face the cumbersome process of electronic tracking on a small computer screen ?

The answer lies in using something with is instantly portable, transferable, editable and yet not a traditional paper. E-Paper ! Yes, something which was born in the 1970?s has matured enough to be taken seriously. The first flexible EPD for consumers could be available in Europe in 2012 itself.

This is one of the spectacular proof that, it is the Business and Industry which will finally be the torch bearers of abatement to Climate Change and Global Warming. And innovation should get support from all quarters to survive the vagaries of market forces. And ones which are as important as Saving forest and whole eco-system the Governments should support it. But before we put some thought as to how we can support and grow such ideas let us understand what it is -

filedesc Made by User:Run! on February 18, 2006 for article Electronic ink (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Electronic paper, e-paper and electronic ink are display technologies which are designed to mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Unlike conventional backlit flat panel displays which emit light, electronic paper displays reflect light like ordinary paper. Many of the technologies can hold static text and images indefinitely without using electricity, while allowing images to be changed later. Flexible electronic paper uses plastic substrates and plastic electronics for the display backplane.
Electronic paper display (EPD) is often considered to be more comfortable to read than conventional displays. This is due to the stable image, which has no need to be refreshed constantly and has a wider viewing angle. An ideal e-paper display can be read in direct sunlight without the image appearing to fade. The contrast ratio in available displays as of 2008 might be described as similar to that of newspaper, though newly-developed displays are slightly better. There is ongoing competition among manufacturers to provide full-color ability.
Applications of electronic visual displays include electronic pricing labels in retail shops, and digital signage, time tables at bus stations, electronic billboards, mobile phone displays, and e-readers able to display digital versions of books and e-paper magazines. Electronic paper should not be confused with digital paper, which is a pad to create handwritten digital documents with a digital pen.

What an innovation. A genius of the human brain which can bring about sea change in the way we work. Tied to a e-book reader, a tablet, a computer and a smart phone, this was perhaps the penultimate tool, which can eliminate maximum use of paper; before we can adopt interactive projections in thin air in front of us, as shown in Sci-fi cinemas and is? some more time in becoming a reality for common persons to have.

So what could be the immediate uses, other than being another TV or a display kiosk? To my mind it can be used for printing architectural drawings, and each of these sheet can be reused till the final design to be produced is readied. And only those need be printed. Sure there would be trials and errors but human always find methods if there is a will. It could also act as submission sheets during class tests which are held with regularity in schools to prepare children for their annual and mid-term exams. The data can always be transferred into flash -drives for storage, thus refreshing the sheets for reuse, while still retaining record of previous data. Perhaps News corporations could devise ways where one could download the ?News Paper view? form e-papers which already exist in the web and in fact they can rent out the flex-sheets, and charge as they would for the subscription. It is common knowledge that? amount of pulp that required daily to publish news papers are humongous.

But, as with Renewable Energy, such high technology would come at a price which would not be within reach of the common person. And here the Governments, guided by the UNEP and other responsible organisations like the World Bank, World Resources Institute, Climate Action International, Green Peace, Carbon Disclosure Project etc should come together to focus in finding the right financial instruments which would help scale it and make it affordable. In fact small amounts from those that are pledged under various programs to arrest deforestation and abate climate change could be pooled to make such innovations; I?m sure many more equally important are around the corner; a success.

In fact if the news paper readers from world over could just contribute $1 the amount would be huge, and in the bargain the Earth would gain.

Closing bank account will cost you, group finds

Want to close your bank account? It could cost you as much as $55.

In a survey of the practices of the 10 largest banks in the country ? including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank and Wells Fargo ? policy and advocacy group Consumers Union found that people who want to close their accounts at big banks and switch to a smaller bank can face costly obstacles.

"Banks have added all sorts of fees on basic checking accounts, which has raised alarm bells," said Suzanne Martindale, staff attorney for Consumers Union. "But when you hit breaking point and want to move your money, guess what you encounter: more fees."

Consumers Union said none of the 10 banks will make a free same-day electronic transfer, and all charge for wire transfers or certified checks. Certified checks can cost up to $10 and wire transfers $30.

BB&T and Citibank charge a $25 fee if the account is closed within 90 days, while US Bank, HSBC, and PNC Bank charge customers a $25 fee to close an account that has been open for fewer than 180 days.

The survey was commissioned after the public furor over Bank of America's plan to start charging its customers $5 for using debit cards. Bank of America backed off after many organizations, including Consumers Union and Occupy Wall Street protesters, called on Americans to transfer accounts from large banks into smaller community banks.

A survey of customers at the top 10 banks by consulting firm cg42 in November found that one in five customers actively considered switching accounts. Consumers Union said it soon started hearing from its members that wasn't easy: Not only did it cost money, but it also cost a lot of time.

Opening an account at another bank can take a few days or up to two weeks for all the paperwork to be completed. Re-routing automatic payments and direct deposits into a new account can take four to six weeks and can be a very intimidating and complicated process for some consumers, the group said.

Banks sometimes reopen old accounts after they have been closed by customers.

Chase reopens an account if the bank receives a deposit. Consumers Union said that could easily happen if a direct deposit isn't re-routed in a timely manner. Bank of America's policy is to reopen accounts if any activity hits the account.

Chicago business owner Mark Henderson said he closed his account about 18 months ago and kept receiving statements with a service charge every month saying there wasn't enough money in the account.

After calling several times and telling the bank's customer service representative that the account was closed, Henderson said, he gave up.

"Now I just tear the statement when it comes," Henderson said.

Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Riess wouldn't comment on Henderson's experience. She said the bank advises customers who are closing accounts to allow time for pending payments and deposits to clear the account.

"If we receive a deposit or credit to the account after it has been closed, we may re-open the account to accept the item, and the account could be subject to associated fees. We disclose this to customers," Riess said.

Consumers Union warns that customers can end up owing hundreds of dollars in penalty fees or even a monthly maintenance fee if a re-opened account falls below what is needed to avoid such a fee.

Consumers are at risk of more penalty fees after they switch banks. If merchants and other billers charge for late payments for delays while re-routing automatic payments, the previous bank may charge an overdraft fee on an empty account or for a bounced check.

The 10 banks surveyed are Bank of America, BB&T, Chase, Citibank, HSBC, PNC, SunTrust, TD Bank, US Bank and Wells Fargo.

As part of the study, the group sent 16 secret shoppers into branches around the country to ask how to close an account and reviewed online fee schedules and account disclosures, tracked news developments, and collected consumer stories.

If you are like me, you see the writing on the wall and it is NOT quite. But the option to develop prosperity beyond our wildest goals is higher than ever just before. With information &amp motion anyone &amp I do mean any individual can put into practice this approach and generate more wealth in the subsequent 36 months than at any time prior to in heritage.

Gaining information is 1 thing but placing it into action is the essential &amp strategists predict that 95% of our populace is not and will not be geared up for the greatest prosperity transfer in heritage, that is taking place correct now. So if we truly only have six-36 months just before every little thing hits and the subsequent hyperinflationary despair is totally on us, what should we be performing now to be well prepared?

As a Mother, all of this chat about the down economic climate, unemployment charges, home foreclosures, our dying dollar and much more have had me anxious, concerned &amp anxious. So I made a decision to focus that energy &amp uncover out how to be pro-lively &amp prepare for the potential. Following all there is no such point as failure, just failure to strategy.

After heaps of studying, exploring, rethinking &amp take care of I selected to correct this article simply because I want to aid 95% of us to be prepared rather than ignorant. I have to say that I am only a involved and passionate Mother who cares about the long term. I am NOT a economic adviser, I am merely sharing what I have done and what it has done for my loved ones over the very last four mo. So here is one of the 5 wonderful techniques I have discovered in the last 4 months and am currently employing. But just before I go on?if you are reading through this but will not have millions or even hundreds of pounds to commit in anything at all, it really is okay. Just do a little as typically as you can NOW simply because the gains will be a good deal in the near future.

one. Buy Gold &amp Silver ? I chose this approach to share because it is the least complicated, quickest and most useful financial investment a single can make proper now. And I do indicate NOW! It does not consider lots of money, you can purchase one particular coin at a time or 1,000?s it truly is completely up to you.

I have a pal who has been privy to this for several years and in 2008 he acquired $ a hundred,000 dollars value of Silver American Eagle coins at $ 9 every. Right now, Jan. 21, 2011 people coins are value $ 27.51 (are living place value)! Which implies that in significantly less than 3 a long time his ROI was above 300% and attaining. Not bad thinking about I dropped 35% on my The Elevation Group Review investments worth in excess of the previous 3 years (as did eighty% of the rest of us).

two. How To Acquire Gold &amp Silver ? There are a few locations to take into account when buying gold and silver. 1st of all, I go through the guide ?Guide to investing in Gold &amp Silver? which states never ever purchase into ETF?s. Not likely to get into this right here, just read the ebook.

There are 3 businesses to buy Gold and Silver from: Goldsilver.com, Tulving.com or Goldmoney.com

All three are online businesses that assure service and provide the very best premiums. Goldmoney allows you shop your gold in their vault for foreseeable future possession which is fantastic if I at any time want to leave the region and have moneys transferred internationally. (don?t see me carrying out this but is an outstanding &amp a lot safer selection to storing it all myself)

When you purchase metallic from GoldMoney.com, you get the cheapest costs feasible, because the metal is straight from the refinery, without having the rates additional on by dealers.

You can also acquire from a nearby dealer. Which coins you obtain is dependent upon the volume of transaction privacy you want when it will come to the US federal government and IRS.

Here?s an excerpt from Maloney?s book that points out the details?

When you Buy metals from a vendor, there are NO reporting specifications on your portion, or theirs.

You can purchase as much gold or silver as you want, and neither you, nor the vendor is essential to report the purchase. Now the dealer must report the Money transaction if it is $ ten,000 or greater to the IRS, but not the treasured metals. Most gold and silver dealers including Tulving, GoldMoney, and GoldSilver do not accept money. They use financial institution wires for transactions.

When it will come to Promoting your metallic the IRS requires the dealer who buys your metal to submit a 1099B report of the transaction IF you sell?25 or a lot more one-ounce Canadian Gold Maples, Krugerrands, or Mexican Onzas. 1 or more gold bar kilos (32.15 ounces each). one or a lot more one hundred-ounce gold bars. Any silver bar totaling 1,000 ounces of a lot more Any blend of ninety % silver coins totaling $ 1,000 of face worth or more

Dealer reporting demands DO NOT use to American Gold or Silver Eagles in ANY quantity, nor to any other metallic sorts not listed over.

Where reporting DOES arrive into participate in, is when you sell your metals and knowledge money gains.

Just as with shares, bonds, or other investments, you are obligated to report your richesse gains to the IRS when it arrives to treasured metals. If you make a money gain, the IRS would like to know about it.

So preserve all of your receipts, and documents when you purchase and market your steel, and get correct tax advice from your CPA.

3. What to buy ? nicely I kind of gave it absent all ready. Non-numismatic coins are easy to buy, simple to store &amp simple to offer. Gold &amp Silver American Eagles ? ninety% Silver &amp ten% Gold.

With ninety% of silver being consumed in the generating of electronics, there The Elevation Group Review is great need and small is still left. I am new to all this but Silver American Eagles are what I am buying, as did my friend in 2008. I want I would have had eyes to see then but will not let that hold me back and neither really should you.

The folks I have discovered this approach from predict that silver could go up to $ 900+ for every ounce. I now look at each and every latte, dinner out, pair of sneakers extremely in different ways! I compute how several coins I could buy &amp decide on to make a fortune rather of invest it. So do what I mentioned in the starting of this report and buy 1 coin at a time, as you can afford to forgo the starbucks a few occasions a week &amp acquire a Silver American Eagle as a substitute.

For $ thirty (get your initial silver coin) you can implement this financial commitment technique &amp start off your route to gigantic prosperity. It is not so considerably about the cash as it is about the freedom and capability to aid others. If you want to know a lot more about how to purchase and sell gold &amp silver or the added strategies I have uncovered you can observe a video (website link beneath). I opted in to observe this video about two mo. in the past (because I was exploring all this stuff &amp had study ?Information to investing in gold &amp silver?) &amp the education and learning I obtained from it was astounding. I have considering that turn into a member and have learned more than I ever could by getting, reading through and investigating on my very own. Just the approach I shared over has gained me ten% in just two mo.

I hope this details was useful &amp I want you and your family members the very best potential at any time.

Dani, Like I stated in the report?I am a Mother (not a Guru) with problem for the foreseeable future. I want to help as many people prosper as attainable. My true enthusiasm is wellness but with the recent world-wide overall economy I truly feel it is much more essential to help men and women with this post about how to monetarily put together to climate the storm &amp arrive out on the successful finish. My first suggestion is watch this video ? http://www.theelevationgroupllc.com The rubber eventually met the road for me right after watching this video clip. I recognized I was off to a excellent start &amp just required to proceed the race. To get more details about this exceptional membership clickThe Elevation Team Review

After Short Season, NBA Playoffs Begin In Earnest

After a compressed National Basketball season due to a labor lockout, the playoffs have been full of exciting basketball. Robert Siegel talks with sportswriter Stefan Fatsis about the NBA conference semifinal matchups.

ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST:

There are no games scheduled tonight in the National Basketball Association playoffs, which is certainly a blessing for tired players, and it might be tired fans, too. The Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder have all advanced to the two conference finals. The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers meet tomorrow to determine the last NBA semifinalist. And sports writer Stefan Fatsis joins us now, as he does most Fridays. Hi, Stefan.

STEFAN FATSIS, BYLINE: Hey, Robert.

SIEGEL: The playoffs follow what was a condensed regular season that didn't begin until Christmas because of a labor lockout. I know this isn't a front-burner story anymore, but is it fair to say that playing on short turnaround so much probably led to some pretty big injuries that influenced the season?

FATSIS: You know, I'm not convinced that that's the case. I'm sure there are players that were banged up, and you're banged up no matter how long the NBA season or how compressed it is. But to sort of pin the long season for Derek Rose of the Chicago Bulls, for instance, his blown-out ACL in the first round of the playoffs, I don't think is fair.

What we're seeing now, though, is some pretty good basketball. I think a lot of people were worried that the season would require an asterisk, or as Bill Simmons of ESPN wrote, a footnote at least. But so far, there have been compelling storylines, mostly competitive and entertaining playoff series and at least three championship-worthy teams still standing. There are no flukes.

SIEGEL: One of those competitive series ended last night with Miami eliminating the Indiana Pacers in six games. Which do you think is the case, Stefan, the Heat shouldn't have taken six games to eliminate Indiana, or the Heat are right where they should be...

One of those competitive series ended last night with Miami eliminating the Indiana Pacers in six games. Which do you think is the case, Stefan - the Heat shouldn't have taken six games to eliminate Indiana or the Heat are right where they should be and they may yet be real competition for Boston or Philadelphia?

FATSIS: You know, I think the Heat are right where they should be, and we saw that in the last three games. And after the first three games of that series, people were writing Miami's obituary, quite gleefully given LeBron's past failures in the playoffs. Indiana was up two games to one. Chris Bosh of the Heat went down with an injury. Dwyane Wade had a terrible game. And then, oh my goodness, in the last three games of the series, Wade and James averaged 33 points apiece per game. They tore apart a tough Indiana team - acrobatic dunks, impossible passes. And not to give the other series short shrift, but it's hard to see how an aging and gimpy Celtics team or a spunky but undermatched 76ers teams can stop Miami from getting back to the finals.

SIEGEL: Of course, one view of these playoffs is that it hardly matters who wins in the East, the two Western Conference teams, San Antonio and Oklahoma City, really look great. Would either Western team be the favorite of the finals, do you think?

FATSIS: You know, against the Heat I don't think so. But you cannot deny that the Spurs and Thunder have been fantastic. San Antonio took out the Los Angeles Clippers, who were looking pretty entertaining; Oklahoma City took out the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant in five games. San Antonio is winning by an average of almost 14 points per game, Oklahoma City by eight points. The advanced metrics reflect even more dominance by these two teams.

SIEGEL: And there's a great contrast in the Western series now. San Antonio has the seasoned veteran Tim Duncan - it's a fairly old team. And on the other hand, Oklahoma City, a great young team.

FATSIS: Yeah. Let's look at Duncan, though. Thirty-six years old, he's looking great. And the reason is that Gregg Popovich, the coach of the Spurs, has found a way over the last few years to minimize Duncan's minutes on the court but maintain the fact that this offense runs completely through him. This team is on fire. They've won 18 straight games overall, 29 of the last 31 that they've played, and long-term, the San Antonio Spurs over the last 15 years have won at a greater rate than any team in NBA history. And not coincidentally, 15 years ago is when they drafted Tim Duncan.

SIEGEL: And, of course, they have lots of other terrific players besides Duncan. Oklahoma City has two great young players.

FATSIS: They do. Kevin Durant - 15 years younger than Tim Duncan. He's won three straight scoring titles. They've also got guard Russell Westbrook. These two guys, unlike Duncan, seem to need no rest. They played the entire second half of the last two games against the Lakers. Unlike the Spurs who really spread it out - use 10 players - the Thunder go to Durant, Westbrook and the guard James Harden to create their scoring opportunities. This is youth against skill and age. The consensus seems to be on the hot Spurs over the exciting Thunder, but we'll see.

SIEGEL: OK. Have a great weekend, Stefan.

FATSIS: You too, Robert.

SIEGEL: Stefan Fatsis joins us most Fridays to talk about sports and the business of sports.

Staff Virtual, a leading provider of outsourcing to the Philippines, is pleased to announce that today, it has moved its head to Unit 1101, 11th Floor, Pearl Bank Centre Building, Salcedo Village, Makati City, Philippines. The new 229 square meter facility will feature state-of-the-art, redundant phone and Internet that will enable our employees to serve our clients better, and more reliably. For the past two years Staff Virtual has been headquartered in PB Com Tower. Today the company moves to the heart of the city, strategically located closer to the nexus of the city?s main public transport hubs.

Staff Virtual?s office is located in Makati City, the New York City of the Philippines. In this fast-paced hub of companies old and new, Staff Virtual?s space stands out as a relaxed, healthy and comfortable atmosphere that brings out the best in our employees. Many outsourcing providers have to contend with high attrition rates due in no small part to environmental factors: frequent sick leaves caused by poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle and viruses spread through the air conditioning system; high stress levels due to frequent shift changes and late night hours. Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies have to spend increasing amounts on incentives and rewards programs to retain employees, driving up costs. Staff Virtual recognizes and gets to the root of these issues from the start.

Here are a few things you might see at the the Staff Virtual office:
Redundant high-speed Internet
Redundant phone systems
Surveillance and security systems
Company-wide recycling program
Inspirational artwork
Green cleaning products
Fresh flowers
CEO Suggestion box

In the future, the office will feature other amenities including; Lava lamps, bean bags, and large inflatable balls, shared DVD library, books, and magazines, a flat screen TV and surround sound system, assorted video games for relaxation and fun, and a Karaoke machine.

The office will also feature an honor bar, where employees can get healthy snacks and drinks around the clock. Employees take what they need and pay using the honor system. Along with redundancies within the office, the building itself will feature 24/7 generator backup in the event of power outages or blackouts in Manila, which occasionally occur during severe storms.

?It makes a lot of sense to move into this bigger office. The company has grown by 40% in the last three months, and we need more space,? says Ike Stranathan, the Founder and President of Staff Virtual.

Just a couple of weeks after the move, Staff Virtual also started a new season of its employee wellness programme. ?The need for healthy employees who understand nutrition and fitness has never been greater, we want our employees feeling their best so that they can best serve our clients partners,? says Roger Cox, the CEO of Staff Virtual. Cox continued by saying ?The opening of our new large office in Makati reaffirms our commitment to delivering strong support and the best of industry practices to our clients here in North America. Our office will help us meet the increasing demand from organizations looking to make the most of the Philippines flexible, cost effective and highly skilled labor pool.?

Pollution From Asia Affects US Climate

At best useless, at worst a deliberately tendentious metric. Might as well measure it by hair length.

Sure, the PER PERSON pollutant output of countries like India and China is low; they have BILLION(s) of people living essentially like pre-industrial primitives.

Let's use CO2, since you like that metric, but instead of using raw population numbers, let's take at OUTPUT: PPP.

US CO2 5.7 bill (tons/yr), China CO2 3.4 US PPP: $11 trillion. China PPP $7 trillion On that basis they're basically the same.

If we compare per-capita income - since you want to consider that whole population figure more proportionally: US citizens have a PPP income of $43K. China's is $7K. At that same proportion, China's pollution output should be barely 1 bill ton/yr - or in other words, they are putting out more than 3.5 TIMES more pollution per $1 that goes into their citizen's pockets, than the US.

What were you saying again about the US being the "worst in the world"?

If you want to dig deeper you're missing another crucial point, that also explains the PPP:CO2 imbalance.

A significant proportion of Chinese emissions are related to the manufacture of goods which are directly exported to the USA. That is to say, as American manufacturing capacity has declined over the last 50 years, the CO2 production has been outsourced to China. This explains the CO2:PPP imbalance as the majority of the manufactured goods/wealth are immediately exported back to America.

Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson: NAACP, Marriage Equality, Obama, and Voting Rights: The Perfect Storm

What no one thought was possible is coming together and moving the whole nation into a new era of respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. In one week the president of the United States and the board of directors of the historic NAACP gave their support to equal protection under the law through marriage for same-gender-loving couples.

Conservatives are prone to rattle sheets of aluminum in staged rolls of thunder, accompanied by dire warnings of a coming storm, if marriage becomes a civil institution available to all couples. Well, I have a weather update: The rain is falling! And it is going to give life to the seeds of respect and generosity.

As the head of the Metropolitan Community Churches with congregations in nearly all 50 states of the union, I want to heap praise on the NAACP and all peoples who have struggled for the full rights of citizenship and equality. We celebrate the historic decision of the NAACP to support marriage equality and full protection under the law. We affirm the NAACP's recognition of our racially diverse community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

But this is not a moment to put our feet up in satisfaction. It is the time to put our shoulder to the plow and work together to protect our democracy for everyone. Right now, the legislatures in 30 states have passed laws that require additional photo identification from voters and other restrictive laws that NAACP president Ben Jealous called Jim Crow laws for people of color, elderly people, and people with little money.

Until these laws are declared unconstitutional, long-time voters will be forced to spend money they don't have to secure notarized birth certificates -- which they may not have if they were born at home. Seniors will arrive at the polls and be forced to submit a provisional ballot and then return within a set time with a photo ID. The working poor will be forced to decide if they should buy a photo ID or the next meal for their family.

Just as marriage equality is not just a concern for LGBT people but for all citizens who care about equality before the law, voter rights is not the sole purview of the NAACP. If we care about our democracy, if we care about equal laws and a representative government, we need to join with the NAACP and all organizations that are lifting up this crucial issue.

Voting rights are LGBT rights! Elder rights are LGBT rights! Economic rights are LGBT rights! The words of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. still ring true today: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

The perfect storm of officials and movements coming together to support the American dream of equality is here. Let it rain! Let it rain! Let it rain!

Commonly used pesticide turns honey bees into 'Picky eaters'

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Biologists at UC San Diego have discovered that a small dose of a commonly used crop pesticide turns honey bees into "picky eaters" and affects their ability to recruit their nestmates to otherwise good sources of food.

The results of their experiments, detailed in this week's issue of the Journal of Experimental Biology, have implications for what pesticides should be applied to bee-pollinated crops and shed light on one of the main culprits suspected to be behind the recent declines in honey bee colonies.

Since 2006, beekeepers in North America and Europe have lost about one-third of their managed bee colonies each year due to "colony collapse disorder." While the exact cause is unknown, researchers believe pesticides have contributed to this decline. One group of crop pesticides, called "neonicotinoids," has received particular attention from beekeepers and researchers.

The UC San Diego biologists focused their study on a specific neonicotinoid known as "imidacloprid," which has been banned for use in certain crops in some European countries and is being increasingly scrutinized in the United States.

"In 2006, it was the sixth most commonly used pesticide in California and is sold for agricultural and home garden use," said James Nieh, a professor of biology at UC San Diego who headed the research project with graduate student Daren Eiri, the first author of the study. "It is known to affect bee learning and memory."

The two biologists found in their experiments that honey bees treated with a small, single dose of imidacloprid, comparable to what they would receive in nectar, became "picky eaters."

"In other words, the bees preferred to only feed on sweeter nectar and refused nectars of lower sweetness that they would normally feed on and that would have provided important sustenance for the colony," said Eiri. "In addition, bees typically recruit their nestmates to good food with waggle dances, and we discovered that the treated bees also danced less."

The two researchers point out that honey bees that prefer only very sweet foods can dramatically reduce the amount of resources brought back to the colony. Further reductions in their food stores can occur when bees no longer communicate to their kin the location of the food source.

"Exposure to amounts of pesticide formerly considered safe may negatively affect the health of honey bee colonies," said Nieh.

To test how the preference of sugary sources changed due to imidacloprid, the scientists individually harnessed the bees so only their heads could move. By stimulating the bees' antennae with sugar water, the researchers were able to determine at what concentrations the sugar water was rewarding enough to feed on. Using an ascending range of sugar water from 0 to 50 percent, the researchers touched the antennae of each bee to see if it extended its mouthparts. Bees that were treated with imidacloprid were less willing to feed on low concentrations of sugar water than those that were not treated.

The biologists also observed how the pesticide affected the bees' communication system. Bees communicate to each other the location of a food source by performing waggle dances. The number of waggle dances performed indicates the attractiveness of the reward and corresponds to the number of nestmates recruited to good food.

"Remarkably, bees that fed on the pesticide reduced the number of their waggle dances between fourfold and tenfold," said Eiri. "And in some cases, the affected bees stopped dancing completely."

The two scientists said their discoveries not only have implications for how pesticides are applied and used in bee-pollinated crops, but provide an additional chemical tool that can be used by other researchers studying the neural control of honey bee behavior.

The study was funded by the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign and the National Science Foundation.
