Roof Replacement: Your Ticket to a Boosting Home Resale Value

All it takes is a few renovations and some finishing touches to make the house more appealing and looking like it's brand new.

Before getting started on any home improvement project, take a good look at the home's interior first. Look out for any areas that need immediate repairs. Better yet, ask a third party's opinion to ensure no flaws are overlooked, as you may have missed some details that you've grown so accustomed to seeing. Ask somebody else to visualize and step into the shoes of a potential home buyer, then ask that person to observe what features can make the house worth buying or not. Take those observations into account and start working.

Egypt's Morsi in Tahrir tribute to people before oath

Islamist Mohamed Morsi praised Egypt's Muslims and Christians alike Friday and symbolically swore himself in as the country's first elected civilian president, playing up people power before a huge throng at Tahrir Square.

Crowds had packed the square from early in the day for the president-elect's appearance on the eve of his official swearing-in.

Morsi, who won a run-off election earlier this month, was received with applause by the tens of thousands of people gathered in the birthplace of the revolt that overthrew his predecessor Hosni Mubarak last year.

He promised a "civilian state" and praised "the square of the revolution, the square of freedom," in what he called an address to "the free world, Arabs, Muslims... the Muslims of Egypt, Christians of Egypt."

Morsi symbolically swore himself in before the crowd, saying: "I swear to preserve the republican system... and to preserve the independence" of Egypt.

"I am one of you. I fear only God," he told the crowd, hailing "the square of the revolution, the square of liberty -- Tahrir Square."

Before his triumphant arrival, chants against the ruling military which took over on Mubarak's overthrow rang out as people gathered from mid-morning under a searing sun.

In his speech Morsi, whose election has raised concerns among Egypt's sizeable Coptic Christian community, served Washington with advance warning that his politics will be markedly different from those of his ousted predecessor.

He said he would work to secure freedom for Omar Abdul Rahman, a blind Egyptian cleric jailed for life over the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing.

"I will do everything in my power to secure freedom for... detainees, including Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman," Morsi said in his address to the hub of the 2011 revolution.

Abdul Rahman was convicted in 1995 for his role in the World Trade Centre bombing, plotting to bomb other New York targets including the United Nations, and a plan to assassinate Mubarak.

After taking the oath, Morsi will have to contend with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, led by Mubarak's longtime defence minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, that will retain broad powers after it formally hands over.

He also threw down the gauntlet to the SCAF, while addressing the people directly.

"You are the source of power and legitimacy... there is no place for anyone or any institution... above this will," a defiant Morsi said. "I renounce none of the prerogatives of president."

Earlier demonstrators chanted anti-military slogans including: "Down with the power of the military" and "Field marshal, tell us the truth -- is Morsi your president or not?"

The liberal Wafd newspaper reported that Tantawi will remain defence minister in the new government.

-- Differences over power transfer --

The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi resigned after winning the presidency, had called for a huge demonstration in Tahrir on Friday, under the slogan "Day of the transfer of power."

The presidency has announced that Morsi will be sworn in Saturday before the Constitutional Court, after differences with the army over the transfer of power.

Morsi "will go at 11 am (0900 GMT) Saturday to the Constitutional Court to take the oath before the Court's general assembly," said a statement released by state news agency MENA.

Traditionally the president takes the oath in parliament, but Egypt's top court has ordered the disbanding of the Islamist-dominated legislature.

The military subsequently assumed legislative powers and also formed a powerful national security council headed by the president but dominated by generals.

By agreeing to be sworn in by the Constitutional Court, Morsi is effectively acknowledging the court's decision to dissolve parliament.

The SCAF also reserves the right to appoint a new constituent assembly should the one elected by parliament be disbanded by a court decision expected on September 1, even though though the Brotherhood insists that only parliament can appoint the assembly.

Media reports said Morsi was consulting a cross-section of Egyptian society before appointing a premier and a cabinet of mostly technocrats.

In a meeting with Egyptian newspaper editors reported by most dailies on Friday, Morsi pledged there would be "no Islamisation of state institutions" during his presidency.

Morsi has already met Tantawi, as well as a delegation from the Sunni body Al-Azhar, and another representing Egypt's Coptic church.

Amnesty International on Friday urged Morsi to break the cycle of abuse under Mubarak and put Egypt on the path to the rule of law and respect for human rights.

"Egyptians have heard many promises that their demands would be listened to and that things would change, but so far their hopes have largely been frustrated," said Salil Shetty, Amnesty's secretary general.

Parents of webcam spying victim learned from trial

(AP) ? The parents of Tyler Clementi were ready to accept a plea deal calling for no jail time for their son's Rutgers University roommate, who used a webcam to see their son and another man kissing.

But what they learned at trial made them more convinced that the roommate, Dharun Ravi, deserved to be sent to prison.

Tyler's mother, Jane Clementi, said it was only during the trial in March that she learned her son had viewed Ravi's Twitter posts about the webcam dozens of times in the hours before Tyler killed himself in September 2010.

"I did not realize he was in on the joke," Jane Clementi said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press and two other news outlets.

She said that detail made her understand her son's pain more.

The case drew worldwide attention after Clementi's suicide in September 2010, just days after the spying, and made her late son into a symbol of the perils of mistreating young gays.

Jane Clementi, her husband Joe and a son, James, have resumed talking to the media this week to promote the foundation they formed in Tyler's honor. Except for some brief written statements through their lawyer, they had not talked with the media since before Ravi's trial.

He was convicted in March of all 15 criminal counts he faced, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy.

He was released from jail June 19 after serving 20 days of a 30- day sentence imposed by a judge who could have given him up to 10 years in prison.

Ravi was not charged with causing Tyler Clementi's death, but Clementi's family believes his behavior was a factor, especially in light of the tweets.

One of them read, in part: "I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."

Clementi's parents say he told them he was gay just before leaving for college, three weeks before his death, and that he was ready to be out on campus.

They believe that learning about the webcam humiliated him and made him realize that being out as gay on campus would not be so easy.

His parents say that jumping off the George Washington Bridge was ultimately their son's own decision ? and a bad one.

In May, Ravi issued a statement in which he said he was sorry and was ready to serve his sentence. The Clementi's said they didn't see it as an apology, in part because it was not made directly to them. Still, Joe Clementi said, he expects to forgive Ravi, eventually.

The family is trying to figure out how to use the Tyler Clementi Foundation to teach responsible use of social media and increase acceptance of gays in schools, communities and even churches.

Jane Clementi said that until several years ago, when she realized her son James, now 26, was gay, she believed that homosexuality was a sin.

And she says that while she told Tyler she loved him after he came out to her, she believes she should have embraced that about him, not just tried to accept it.

"That needs to come off the sin list," Joe Clementi said.

A: There will be a dinner and silent auction held at the golf course. Auction items will be on display from Noon until 4 pm. Bids will close at 4 pm and the winners will be announced throughout the dinner ceremony.

Q: Tell me anything else you'd like people to know about this event.

A: WALP (Washington Association of Landscape Professionals) is committed to our community. Through charity events and donating our time and skills with community projects. We are licensed professionals dedicated to excellence in the work we provide and our community. That is why we wanted to partner with the WCFR. The WCFR serves nearly 38,000 meals each year. They offer in-house meals where a mother and her kids can come in and be seated and waited on in the restaurant. They also have a fresh market program that families in need are able to come to so that they can provide the kids with well balanced meals. Not only does the WCFR provide in-house meals, but they also regularly provide meals for Hope House, St. Margaret?s Shelter, Crosswalk and feed Cheney. They are also asked to help provide one time meals for special events. These requests come from Lutheran Community Services, SNAP, My Sisters Temple and the Breakfasts for the Homeless. WCFR is entrenched with our Spokane community and making a difference in it.

Reduce the Junk: Three Tips for Maintaining Your Email Account ...

?

Fight back the inbox clutter by installing spam filters, unsubscribing from unnecessary lists, and setting aside time for the important messages.

In this age of Facebook, Twitter, Skype, instant messaging, and texting, your email account can quickly become a graveyard for spam if you don?t take steps to manage it. Good old-fashioned email is still an ideal way to communicate with colleagues, friends, and family?but it can become a time-consuming chore if you have to wade through dozens of unsolicited junk emails to find the worthwhile messages to respond to. Here are three ways to maintain control over your email account and make the most of your time.

1. Install a Spam Filter. The very first thing to do, if you haven?t already, is install a spam filter. Virtually every email program or free email clients like Gmail or Yahoo Mail has some sort of spam filter functionality. Go into your Settings to turn on or customize your spam filtering. If you?re using an email program like Mac Mail or Outlook Express, you can purchase spam-filtering software. These vary in price and quality, so be sure to look up product reviews to see which spam filter is best for the specific email program you?re using.

One thing to note about using a spam filter is that your computer will do its best to guess what is or isn?t junk mail, but sometimes it will be wrong. It?s a good idea to periodically check your spam folder to make sure that there are no emails in there that you actually need.

Unsubscribe from Email Marketing Lists. The second thing would be to get off any email marketing lists that you?re not actively engaging with on a regular basis, such as daily deal websites like Groupon or Gilt, or newsletter subscriptions. These subscriptions can seem like a good idea when you first sign up, but they soon become burdensome?and usually go unread?when they come in day after day. As these emails come in, find the ones you haven?t read regularly for the last few months and unsubscribe.

2. On a similar note, if you?re on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or LinkedIn, go to your account settings for those sites and turn off email notifications. When you visit those sites they automatically alert you to new messages or other interactions; there?s no reason for those same alerts to clutter your email account.

Set Aside Time for the Backlog. Start putting aside some time during your day to actually process the email that is there?maybe in thirty-minute chunks a couple of times a day?simply to get through the email backlog. Reading and responding to email requires real attention?it?s not something you can leave for your spare time.

3. Doing all of these things together?putting in spam filters, unsubscribing from unnecessary email marketing lists, and setting aside specific time each day to read, respond, and archive or delete emails?should help reduce the influx of email that is coming in.

Exclusive Interview with Amy McFarland, award ... - Olson Visual

Amy McFarland was head of the graphic design department at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). During her 24 year career at LACMA, Amy designed many books as well as graphics for more than 100 exhibitions, featuring such fine artists as Jasper Johns, Gustav Klimt and Picasso. McFarland also worked on such major exhibitions as Van Gogh?s Van Gogh, King Tut and Tim Burton. She has won over 50 design awards including the Library of Congress George Wittenborn award for best art book in North America of 2000 (Ghost in the Shell: Photography and the Human Soul, 1850-2000) and the American Federation of Arts best exhibition graphics within the United States for ?When Art Became Fashion: Kosode in Edo-Period Japan.?

Her work has also appeared in numerous publications. Here, her love of book design encourages her explorations outside the traditional boundaries of bookmaking. She enjoys reinterpreting the traditional format of art books, playing with the numerous possible juxtapositions between words and images, and presenting unique graphic surprises for reader and viewer alike.

OV: Can you explain your concept of ?Clean Slate Design?, the name of your new design company?

AM: I came to LACMA at the age of 24 and was the youngest employee there for many years. I was most fortunate to be surrounded by great mentors who had an exceptional eye for the sublime. Last August, I was laid off and had to start all over again. Although I felt vulnerable at first, I wanted to shift my energy into thinking positively. The lay off was unforeseen but it was a blessing in disguise because I had a great deal of curators tracking me down with their heart felt support. The word ?clean? kept on coming up in sentences on how the curators described my design, work ethic, and my design process. Plus, I literally was starting over with a ?clean slate.? I also encourage my clients to rethink their visual branding as well. So they too, will be starting fresh with a clean slate of new ideas.

OV: What is your general approach to design?

AM: Most artists and designers will start off with some kind of ?spark? of inspiration. Once I have that ?spark? I immediately challenge myself into coming up with 10-15 well thought out ideas that the client will enjoy reacting to. I also feed off of the client?s thoughts and wishes. It is always surprising to hear their interpretation on what is laid out in front of them. At this point in the design process, I remind them that the possibilities are endless. There is no one answer. Sometimes the client can be fearful of the less predictable because of their usual aesthetic ?comfort zone.? I love working with clients who are willing to go through the journey with you. It?s a win/win situation because there is a 100% chance that the end result will be innovative and fresh.

OV: How do you choose a texture or color?

AM: Designers have to practice being like ?Switzerland??(neutral) when it comes to leaning towards any favoritism in color or texture. The appropriate always helps strengthen and support the design philosophy. Legibility is a must!

I learned a great deal in picking out gallery wall colors for museum exhibitions from a great man named Bernard Kester. He was the dean of Art and Architecture at UCLA and has a masterful eye. If he did not like something, you would know. He was the litmus test on great exhibition design at LACMA for over 40 years.

I recommend going easy on texture?like perfume, you want to support the content, not overwhelm the art with mixed visual messages.

OV: Which artists and designers have inspired you? And Why?

AM: In general, when you are working with a master artist or curator, usually there are no egos involved. There is instead, a collaboration that is genuine. I worked with John Baldessari on the Magritte exhibition and he was simply lovely! When you get into the same rhythm as your client or, in this case a guest artist, your vision becomes synchronized. The process is honest and clean. The level of enthusiasm is contagious!

My favorite book designer here in Los Angeles is Tracey Shiffman. She did her first book at LACMA. I met her in the late 1980?s. Her work is like sipping on good wine! It was enjoyable throughout the entire experience.? She has a healthy respect towards artists and this shows in her work. When I experience a book designed by Tracey Shiffman, I know that I will be pleasantly surprised by her design decisions. I love that!

OV: What makes a good design?

AM: With a fresh approach towards design, one is reinterpreting a thought or idea. It does not necessarily mean to make the design avant-garde or have only three people understand the concept. We design to communicate to the masses. Hopefully we can produce something where people will continue to talk about it.?Good design engages you for a long time.

OV: One quality that is most recognizable in your work is the consideration and detail in the way someone holds your brochures and invitations. It is obvious that the physical experience of opening and handling of these objects is part of your design. Can you describe your process of creating this experience?

AM: I come from an Asian background and therefore, my work can be described as an ?origami? experience. I consider exploring this concept during the beginning stage of my process. Invitations are wonderful opportunities for this investigation because it is the preamble to the actual special event. These invitations give me the challenge to try and ?sell? the idea to someone who has to get all gussied up on a school night and drive into the city who personally may not have originally liked the art. I?ll ask the events coordinator after the reception is over if there were a great deal of people in attendance. My biggest compliment was that they ran out of appetizers for a 16th century Mongolian calligraphy painting exhibition. Who knew that this exhibition would draw such a massive crowd?

OV: Describe one of your favorite projects?

AM: I?ve had many favorable experiences yet the one favorite project will most likely be the Ghost in the Shell exhibition and catalogue design. I was working with the head curator of the photography department at LACMA. He studied design in the late 1950?s so he was knowledgeable in my practice. I had a meeting with him in his office one day and he showed me the white Xeroxes of works that he was considering to be part of the exhibition. Half of these images were of nineteenth century patients in asylums. Very disturbing yet I could not take my eyes of these powerful images! I knew instantly that I had to be apart of this exhibition. I got a letter from Richard Avedon complimenting me on the design of the book.

OV: Why did you enjoy this project?

AM: I told my curator about how I originally wanted to be a doctor. I used to read the medical journal called JAMA to bed. I was so disturbed by the images found in the book but yet the design of a medical book was less unnerving to me. That was my ?spark? in interpreting the content of this project. I tend to ?build? secret design ideas that can be more personal to the people involved. The cloth cover for instance, is a cream colored leatherette that resembles skin (the Shell) and the embossed circle in the middle became the curator?s martini coaster. (This curator had a martini every night).

OV: Describe how designing for museums is different from working with other clients (hotels, design firms, commercial design, etc.)?

AM: Museums are sacred spaces. It is our collective society that dictates to museums which artwork is worth the investment in preserving for our future generations to enjoy and interpret. In working in a museum, your colleagues are all there with a common interest: to support and preserve the art. Museums also tend to be non-profit so your marketing ideas are towards a prospective visitor and not directly to a buyer. Most people will visit a museum only once every few years so finding the right image and type solution is very important. The design must represent the experience of a museum.

Working with a for-profit company is different. The designer?s contributions need to support the company?s visual messaging. You can become apart of that dialogue in recreating a new visual message but the outcome of your design should positively support their revenue.

OV: Can you describe the most recent project where you worked with Olson Visual?

AM: Sure! I was hired to do the graphic interpretation of Carefree California: Cliff May and the Romance of the Ranch House exhibition by the Art, Design, and Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara. ?This exhibition was part of the PST program here, in Southern California. Cliff May was a well-known architect that practiced primarily during the 1950?s.? It is very challenging to do an architecture exhibition because of its large-scale space. Looking at drawings, one cannot fully interpret the experience in walking into a three dimensional environment. Having very large photo murals placed within the galleries allowed a visual reference to have a three-dimensional experience. For instance, looking at 1950?s people blown up to the actual size of them playing tennis in front of a Cliff May home, added support to the content of this show. These large graphics were also, printed by Olson Visual.? They fabricated the title wall and didactics. The shape of the didactics were taken directly out of one of Cliff May?s drawings. I thought that in having a mid-century sign reinterpreted as the gallery didactics would add to the experience. Plus, there were over 150 drawings, and most of them were pencil drawings on cream-colored uncoated stock. The wall color was kept very neutral. In this case, the galleries needed a bit of a ?punch? to help the overall experience, as one goes through one gallery and into another. Everybody was thrilled over the final outcome. I thought that AD&A Museum was treated in the same caliber as in our local major museum?s here in Los Angeles.

OV: Describe your experience when working with OV.

AM: I?ve worked briefly with other fabricators in the past. ?I always find myself,?highly favoring Olson Visual. Most of their employees are artists so they have a trained eye in matching color. That is a special skill that many other fabricators do not have. Olson Visual always keeps up with the latest technology. I find that their staff gets very excited when a new tool is being introduced. There have been times when I will drive down to Hawthorne, to their office, and will work directly with their employees so that we are all on the same page. OV is also very open to exploring using unusual materials. Eder Cetina has been my contact for over 10 years.? I have learned so much from him. He has shared with me the latest hardware devices to help support a banner system.

OV: Why do you think Olson Visual is one of the leading graphic providers?

AM: The three Olson brothers understand that the communication age is here to stay.? Living in a major city that has a tremendous appetite for new imagery/concepts, there is a golden opportunity to explore what is the current pulse on information graphics. Providing good customer service is most reassuring.? In addition, with Olson Visual, you are truly in good hands. Things sure have changed since Mr. Olson opened up his business on Beverly Blvd., back in the 1950?s.

OV: What are OV?s best attributes?

AM: I would describe Olson Visual as: having a good ?artistic? eye towards details, quality driven, by your side from beginning to end, asks lots of questions before beginning the project so that there are no misunderstandings, and will work within your budget. They also suggest other ways to execute a project that may be less expensive. This is always welcome!

OV: Do you have a favorite quote or a message that you would give to another designer?

AM: Well, I used to say to my wonderful and talented designers at LACMA, ?what we do is not a cure for cancer.? In other words, if you go about your design process too seriously, then your great ideas can get squashed. A playful creative process is important and this is usually why we decided to become designers in the first place. The fearlessness in the creative process will lead you to more inventive ideas. I also am a strong supporter in not allowing yourself to make mistakes as long as you learn from the experience.

Being a good, well-developed designer is a journey. One needs to embrace this because design is never one result at the end of that journey.

Scholastic's new dvd set is a treasure trove of family fun | philspicks

Courtesy: New Video Group

The most recent Storybook Treasures collection from Scholastic and New Video Group is, much like the first two collections, a properly titled set.? The three discs included in the set are loaded with fun and family friendly stories based on some of the greatest children?s books ever written.? Along with entertaining young audiences, it also educates them with stories that teach valuable lessons.? Add in original animation and a read along option, and families have a collection that will be a favorite for one child to the next.

All three discs in the collection offer their own share of fun and learning.? Among some of the most enjoyable stories included in the set are stories of a little squirrel that had to overcome his fear of the world, a group of singing farm animals, and a little dog who couldn?t bark.? There?s even a fun and insightful story of a little squirrel who had to overcome his fear of the world.

In the story of ?Scaredy Squirrel??narrated by David de Vries?audiences are introduced to a little squirrel who is scared of the outside world.? He goes through every day of his life doing exactly the same thing without coming out of his tree.? He even has an emergency kit and emergency plan in case anything should ever happen to him.? The emergency kit is stocked with all kinds of items, from band-aids to anything else that a person could imagine.? Scaredy Squirrel goes about his daily routine every day until a bee comes along one day and changes everything for him.? When the bee buzzes Scaredy Squirrel, he?s forced to jump from?his tree.? In the process, he forgets his emergency kit.? But that?s not an entirely bad thing.? Because of what happens, Scaredy Squirrel discovers that he didn?t even know he was a flying squirrel.? So now, he was far less frightened of the world.? He even tosses out his emergency kit, and changes up his daily routine.? The story teaches young audiences that change is a part of life.? And change can be a good thing.? So why be afraid of the outside world and its change.? It teaches viewers to embrace life and change.? This is in itself an important lesson.

?Scaredy Squirrel? teaches a valuable lesson about accepting change and everything that the world has to offer.? It?s only one of the many?high points of?Scholastic?s Storybook Treasures Vol. 3.? Along with teaching valuable life lessons, the collection also entertains audiences.? One of the funniest stories included in this set is ?Doby Dooby Moo.?? ?Dooby Dooby Moo? is narrated by country legend Randy Travis.? It tells the story of a group of farm animals who decide to enter a talent contest at the annual county fair to try and win a trampoline.? As they?re practicing for the talent show, the farmer who owns the animals is keeping a close eye on them.? He wants to catch them in the act.? One can?t help but wonder if this story was the influence behind Nickelodeon?s cg-based movie and short lived tv series, ?Barnyard.?? The animals do win the trampoline.? It?s thanks to Duck singing ?Born To Be Wild.?? Think that?s outrageously funny?? Try having one of the judges in the talent contest being a cat.

?Dooby Dooby Moo? is a wonderfully hilarious short story.? It?s not the only funny story included in the set, either. ?Bark, George? is the lead story on the set?s third disc.? It?is among the silliest stories in the entire collection.? Acting legend John Lithgow narrates the story of the little dog, George who tries to bark, but can?t.? George?s mother tries again and again to get George to bark.? But each time he tries to bark, he makes a different noise.? First he meows like a cat.? And then he quacks like a duck.? Then he oinks like a pig and even moos like a cow.? Unable to figure out what?s wrong, George?s mother takes him to the vet to get checked out.? The vet tells George to bark.? Again, George meows instead of barks.? So the vet puts on a pair of gloves and reaches down inside of George.? To everyone?s surprise, the vet pulls a cat out of George.? The vet says again for George to bark.? This time, George quacks.? So again, the vet reaches in.? This time he pulls out a duck.? Then again, the vet repeats his procedure, and pulls out a pig and then a cow.? Finally after all the animals are out, the vet once more tells George to bark, and he does.? George?s mother is so excited that George can bark that she takes him out and tells him to bark for everyone.? Much to her surprise, instead of barking, George simply says, ?Hello.??

Audiences of all ages will love the inanity of George?s story.? It?s just a fun, turn off your brain moment for the whole family.? And it?s just one of so many included throughout the entire three disc set that will?make it a family favorite.? Whether for such funny moments, or for the educational moments, Scholastic?s Storybook Treasures Vol. 3 is loaded with plenty of treasures for the whole family.? It?s one of those collections that will be fun for parents and kids, and even for grandkids.? It?s one of those sets whose stories are so timeless and fun that it will be a staple in any family?s home library for generations to come.

(AP) ? The brother of Ponzi scheme king Bernard Madoff will plead guilty on Friday to conspiracy and falsifying records, admitting his role in the multibillion-dollar fraud that destroyed the savings of thousands of investors, prosecutors told a judge on Wednesday.

Peter Madoff, the former chief compliance officer at the private investment arm of Bernard Madoff's business, has agreed to serve a decade in prison, they said.

Peter Madoff also agreed to the criminal forfeiture of $143 billion, including all of his real estate and personal property. The $143 billion, representing the amount of money believed to have flowed through the business accounts when he was part of the multi-decade Ponzi scheme, is included in a criminal forfeiture agreement, though authorities know that his assets would never approach that figure.

Court papers signed by a federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday show Peter Madoff, who had worked with his brother since 1965, will plead guilty to two criminal counts, admitting his role in a conspiracy to commit securities fraud, falsify records of an investment adviser, falsify records of a broker dealer, make false filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, commit mail fraud and obstruct the Internal Revenue service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa A. Baroni wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain that, pursuant to a plea agreement with the government, Madoff, 66, had agreed "not to seek a sentence other than 10 years' imprisonment."

Madoff's attorney didn't immediately return an email seeking comment on Wednesday.

Bernard Madoff, 74, is serving a 150-year prison sentence in Butner, N.C., after revealing in December 2008 that he cheated thousands of investors of roughly $20 billion for years, using money from new investors to pay returns to existing clients. A $171 billion forfeiture order entered against Madoff forced him to relinquish tens of millions of dollars in personal property, including real estate, investments and $80 million in assets his wife had claimed were hers. The $171 billion represented the total amount of money that went through the company during the fraud.

Lawyers for a court-appointed trustee recovering money for Bernard Madoff's investors had said Peter Madoff also was the company's senior managing director.

The trustee, Irving Picard, said in court papers that Peter Madoff "failed miserably" to meet his responsibilities to monitor the company's operations and ensure its compliance with federal securities laws.

The court papers said Peter Madoff had received at least $60 million during the fraud and used fake stock trades to make large withdrawals seem justified.

Picard sought nearly $200 million from Madoff family members, claiming they used Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC as "the family piggy bank" to pay for vacation homes, cars, boats and even a stake in a beauty parlor.

Picard's pending lawsuit alleges that over the years Peter Madoff, his daughter and his nephews "withdrew millions more than they invested" in private investment accounts they had with the firm.

Peter Madoff "ignored obvious red flags that the profits reflected in account statements could not have been earned legitimately, to the detriment of BLMIS and its other customers," the lawsuit says.

Bernard Madoff's relatives have said they did not know about his Ponzi scheme.

The massive scheme, run since at least the early 1990s, demolished the life savings of thousands of people, wrecked charities and shook confidence in the U.S. financial system. When Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty, he insisted that he acted alone, describing a separate wholesale stock-trading firm run by his sons and brother as honest and legitimate.

So far, Picard's office has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.1 billion and has distributed more than $1.1 billion to Madoff's victims.

In a statement Wednesday, Picard's spokeswoman, Amanda Remus, said the trustee and his lawyers are aware of the letter to the court about the anticipated guilty plea proceeding involving Peter Madoff but had no comment.

Approaches To Parent Involvement In Early Childhood Education ...

Research has it that parent involvement in early childhood education is very important in the emotional, cognitive, academic and the overall achievement of a child. Children who spend some time reading with their next of kin at home have better reading skills and perform better academically. Right from the time a child goes to kindergarten classes the guardian should walk with them at school.

Schools have the upper hand in ensuring that the family members are actively involved with their kids in school. Teachers should try and know close relatives of their pupils up close. Teachers can capitalize on this bond because if a close relative genuinely sees that a teacher is interested in their child, then they would go an extra mile to ensure that it stays that way for the sake of their offspring.

Constant communicating is a good sign. Communication should involve the one way and two-way. Two-way in that the teacher and care giver can talk about the child freely and discuss on how to improve it. One way communication is used to pass information that a school thinks the parents should have.

Celebrating the children achievements is a very good way to keep the bond alive. You can create portfolios or even scrap books containing the children?s achievements. The guardians can visit the classrooms on school events and get to see their children?s work and achievements. This elicits excitement and more concern from the guardians.

Flexibility in scheduling school events is very vital for the intended people to attend. For a blood relative who is too busy, the school can always schedule home visits, make phone calls updating them on the child?s progress in order to keep them at bay.

parent involvement in early childhood education is highly recommended. Schools that help out the next of kin achieve this facilitate in reducing stress on families in raising their children. Teachers help the family member in learning what is going on with their children as they keep the communication alive.

Kris Humphries' Legal Team To Subpoena Kanye's Ex Amber Rose ...

WENN/Splash News

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Kris Humphries is going to subpoena Kanye West's ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose, because she has previously claimed that the hip hop superstar and reality TV star hooked up several years ago and not recently as Kim has claimed; meanwhile, the NBA star's deposition is taking place right now in Minnesota, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

As we previously reported, Rose claimed earlier this year, before West and Kardashian went public with their romance, that Kim tried to steal Kanye from her. They were both cheating," Amber, 28, tells Star exclusively. "They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other...Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye are not together," Amber told Star Magazine via RadarOnline.com. "She's a homewrecker!"

PHOTOS: Kim Kardashian's Bikini Body Through The Years

Kris legal team "will absolutely be issuing a subpoena for Amber Rose to be deposed because she has very relevant information and could contradict Kim's timeline about when she and Kanye West became romantically involved. Kris' team hasn't spoken to Amber yet, but they are hopeful that she will be a cooperative witness. If Kris' lawyers determine she will be a hostile witness, they will still depose her because they just want to get to the truth," a source close to the situation tells us.

Meanwhile, Humphries deposition is being conducted in Minnesota right now. "The deposition is expected to go all day, and Kim's lawyer, Laura Wasser, had to trek from Los Angeles to the midwest for the deposition, and it could last for at least two days.? Kim isn't at the deposition, although she could have chosen to be there. Kim's deposition will be taking place in the next ten days in Los Angeles, and Kris' lawyer, Lee Hutton, will go to California for it," an insider tells us.

Also being deposed in the bitter divorce battle will be Kim's ex-boyfriend, Reggie Bush and current love interest Kanye West.

After all depositions are completed, a date for the divorce trial will be set. Kim and Kris' depositions are being vieo taped.

A rep for Kris Humphries had no comment, and his lawyer didn't immediately respond to request for comment.

(AP) ? After two hours of clever, often dominating but in the end fruitless play, Italy found the answer against England.

Penalty kicks.

Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England.

Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. Defending champion Spain plays Portugal on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

"We deserved this victory," Diamanti said. "The penalties rewarded our dominance during the match. It's only fair, we played a great match and battled from the first to the last minute."

But not until penalties by Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo ? with an audacious slow chip-shot down the middle of the goal ? and Antonio Nocerino did the Azzurri find the net. Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney scored England's penalties.

The difference: Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England's third, and Ashley Cole's attempt was saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

For England, it was yet another exit from a major tournament in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout. England lost to Portugal in the same manner at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

"It's obviously a hard way to go out," England striker Wayne Rooney said. "And it's maybe happened too many times now."

England briefly led the shootout after Riccardo Montolivo missed Italy's second penalty. His shot went wide of Joe Hart's right post as the England goalkeeper guessed correctly.

Rooney then sent Buffon the wrong way, firing in his spot kick to the keeper's right to give England a 2-1 lead.

The momentum shifted after Pirlo's bold piece of skill leveled it 2-2.

"I just saw that the goalkeeper was moving a bit earlier so I decided to play it the other way," Pirlo said. "It just comes to you at that moment and it went well."

Not for England.

"We have done the country proud, but again we go home with heartbreak and it's difficult to take," said Gerrard, who played in both those previous shootout losses.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of the net. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a shot wide in the clearest chance of the second period of extra time.

Nocerino, another substitute, thought he had scored from Diamanti's cross in the 115th but was offside.

Daniele De Rossi hit the post in the third minute, and Buffon saved a shot from Glen Johnson in the fifth.

The first scoreless match at Euro 2012 was neither dull nor lacking good soccer.

Italy's attacking desire and creativity under coach Cesare Prandelli had playmaker Pirlo at its heart. Italy had 35 shots, compared to only nine for England.

An intriguing match almost demanded that Balotelli take center stage. The Italy forward ran clear in the 25th, but hesitated and allowed John Terry to block his chipped shot.

Balotelli forced Hart, his teammate at Manchester City, to save an acrobatic shot, then surged between England's central defenders before putting a half-volley over the crossbar. He kicked the goal post in frustration.

Italy continued surging in the second half and De Rossi, taking a ball over his shoulder, scuffed his shot wide. De Rossi sank to his knees in obvious exasperation, and more Italian frustration quickly followed.

Three rapid-fire chances in the 52nd saw Hart beat away De Rossi's long-range shot, block Balotelli's follow-up and watch Montolivo lash the loose ball high.

England coach Roy Hodgson had to react to Italy's dominance, and sent on substitutes Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott, who both scored in a 3-2 win over Sweden.

Carroll's muscular presence created a shooting chance for Young, but England still failed to convince. Rooney made little impression after an early diving header.

De Rossi was replaced by Nocerino and the substitute threatened in the 89th. He took another crafty pass from Pirlo on the run, but Johnson tracked back to block.

Deep into injury time, Italian defensive jitters created a chance for Rooney but his overhead kick sailed high.

Then it was on to penalties. And Diamante's heroics.

"Getting to this point is a huge satisfaction," Diamanti said. "I always believed I would, even when I played in the inter-regional division ? I just never told anyone, because they would have thought I was crazy."

Paraguay's ousted president defiant after 'coup'

Jorge Adorno / Reuters

Paraguay's ousted President Fernando Lugo holds a news conference outside his home on Sunday.

By msnbc.com news services

ASUNCION, Paraguay - Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo branded the country's new government illegitimate on Sunday and called for democracy to be restored as neighboring countries intensified criticism of his sudden impeachment.

Lugo, a leftist former Roman Catholic bishop, said his removal from office was "a parliamentary coup against the will of the people" and said he would back any peaceful effort to restore democracy in the South American nation.

Congress voted overwhelmingly on Friday to remove Lugo from office, saying he had failed in his duty to maintain social order following a bloody land eviction.

Under the Paraguayan constitution, the impeached president was replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a vocal critic of Lugo for much of his presidency.

Franco's newly appointed foreign minister urged Lugo to help quell the regional tensions, saying it was his "duty as a Paraguayan citizen and former president."

Paraguay under pressure from neighbors after Lugo is ousted

But Lugo refused to help his successor.

"We support any kind of peaceful effort aimed at restoring institutional order that was interrupted by Parliament," he told reporters.

"This is a fake government. You can't collaborate with a government that doesn't have legitimacy," he said, adding that he would attend a summit of the regional trade bloc Mercosur later this week to explain the situation.

Argentina, which currently holds Mercosur's rotating presidency, said Franco's government would not be allowed to attend the meeting.

'A pariah'
In a region scarred by military coups and political upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s, the rapid nature of Lugo's impeachment by an opposition-controlled Congress has drawn strong criticism -- especially from fellow leftists.

A senior Brazilian official said Paraguay would likely be suspended from the regional UNASUR grouping and from Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

"The point is to make this new government a pariah," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Regional powerhouse Brazil has recalled its top diplomat for consultations and the ambassador is unlikely to return while Franco remains in the presidency, the official added.

Oil shipments halted
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Lugo's removal as president was illegal, halted oil shipments to Paraguay and withdrew his ambassador from the country. Argentina's Cristina Fernandez pulled top envoy out on Saturday.

"We don't recognize this government. I've ordered the amassador in Asuncion to pack his things and leave," Chavez said in a speech. "We're going to stop sending oil too."

Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA supplies about a quarter of Paraguay's oil needs under a deal that lets countries buy crude on soft financing terms and even pay in farm goods.

Chavez compared Lugo's removal to the 2009 coup that removed Manuel Zelaya in Honduras.

Nations including Canada, Spain and Germany recognized the new government after Lugo said on Friday he would accept the congressional vote to remove him. Others, including Chile and Colombia on Sunday, have summoned ambassadors for a briefing.

Andres Cristaldo / EPA

Federico Franco, center, replaced Fernando Lugo as president.

Lugo has suggested that national and international clamor could lead Paraguayan lawmakers to reverse his impeachment.

Despite the chorus of international criticism, Paraguay's low-key riverside capital was calm on Sunday. Fewer police were patrolling the streets than in recent days and restaurants and businesses were open as usual.

"Lugo was useless but what happened in Congress was a joke -- it was like pigs talking about hygiene," said Benjamin Aguayo, 18, in downtown Asuncion.

A small group of Lugo supporters gathered outside the state TV studios to demonstrate in favor of his return to office.

Lugo's impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed six police and 11 peasant farmers during a recent land eviction. He was one year away from completing his five-year term.

Paternity scandals
Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America and Lugo, 61, vowed to improve the quality of life of low-income families when his election ended six decades of rule by the conservative Colorado party.

But he struggled to push reforms, including land redistribution to poor peasant farmers, through Congress. A cancer scare and several paternity scandals dating back to his time as a bishop added to his difficulties.

When his allies from the Liberal Party withdrew support for him on Thursday, they cleared the way for the impeachment trial.

In contrast to Lugo, Franco has solid backing among ranchers and farmers in the world's No. 4 soybean exporter.

"The agricultural industry is going to be a priority, no question about it, because it's vital for Paraguay," said Liberal lawmaker Gustavo Cardozo.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Cthulhu saves Mac, iOS, and Android on June 28

Lovecraftian horror turned counterculture icon Cthulhu will attempt to reclaim his ability to destroy all of mankind once again this Thursday, June 28, when Cthulhu Saves The World launches on OSX, iOS and Android, according to Touch Arcade.

Each version of the game will run you a smooth $1.99, making these releases $1 cheaper than the PC version on Steam and $1 more expensive than the original XBLIG jam. It's unclear whether the game will be a Universal iOS app, or if iPhone/iPad specific versions will be released at $1.99 each, though the game's classic JRPG-style interfaces should adapt well to touchscreen devices either way.

Launching on additional platforms has worked out well for Zeboyd in the past; it'll be interesting to see if the game's street cred translates to success in the indie-saturated mobile market.
